LOCATION: Usually located at Union Head Office but will also be expected to visit other University sites and external venues

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES: To manage, direct and coordinate marketing and promotional activity within the organization in furtherance of its strategic objectives.

MAIN DUTIES

To work with the Officers and General Manger to provide a co-ordinated strategic approach to planning communication for the Union.

To develop the Union’s business in conjunctions with the appropriate officers, managers and staff.
To develop, in conjunction with senior and service coordinators, strategic communication, marketing, promotional and business plans for each areas of organisational activity and to monitor and adjust in line with findings and trends.

To direct and drive the generation of revenue from sponsorship, advertising, and other sales related activities, in conjunction with the General Manager and key managers.

To recruit, develop, appraise and motivate the staff for whom the post-holder is responsible, ensuring the expected standards of performance are achieved. To implement the correct disciplinary procedures where necessary.

To maintain and develop links with relevant external organisations on a marketing and/or PR basis.
To manage the Union’s distribution & communication service, reviewing systems to ensure that a high standard of customer care is given at all times.

To act as Staff Adviser to the Campaigns and Communications Officer and associated committees.
To conduct market research as appropriate and analyse trends relating to Union services and membership feedback.

To identify, review and advise the Executive Committee through the General Manager on the best use of new media in achieving communication objectives.


EXPECTED STANDARDS

Development and implementation of an overarching strategic plan for the whole organisation. Use of the plan in the development of budgets, sales & marketing, training and other plans.
Develop new product or service initiatives for commercial and non-commercial areas. Manage the implementation as appropriate.

Monitor and assess against financial & other benchmarks.
Plans to be monitored to agreed time-scales and standards for all outlets. To maintain close liaison with senior and outlet managers, including the establishment of sale budgets for outlets and key performance indicators to be identified and monitored.

Measurable increase in non-student income via media sales, sponsorship or other sales activity; Full liaison with commercial department and external marketing agencies.
Recruitment, appraisal and disciplinary procedures are adhered to in line with the Equal Opportunities policy.

Staff have clear goals and are supported in their achievement
Key groups within the University and wider community to be identified and targeted, and action plans for their involvement to be devised.

Services to meet high standards of customer care for students, visitors and staff
Advice to be impartial and non-directive and development to be measurable and within budget.
Information informs the Union strategic plan and membership feedback informs both representation and services.
That the Union continues to use innovative and new communication methods which engage students and deliver on our mission.


• It is recognised that the grading of this post allows for new or alternative areas of responsibility to be added or substituted according to the strategic needs of the organisation
In addition, all staff have the following general duties laid out in their job descriptions:
• To deliver and develop targets outlined in the Union’s strategic plan.
• To contribute and assist in the Union’s planning processes and the review of its performance and systems.
• Contribute to the positive and professional image of the Union and not act in such a manner as to bring the Union into disrepute.
• To observe and uphold the requirements of the Union Constitution and act at all times in accordance with policies including equality of opportunity.
• To undertake your own typing, filing, photocopying etc.
• Undertake any other duties appropriate for the grade and responsibilities of the post that may from time to time be reasonably requested.
• To take ownership of, their Induction, Personal Review Programme, Departmental Staff Meetings and be responsible for carrying out duties with full regard to the rules, policies and procedures and conditions of service contained in the Staff Handbook, and within Departments of the Students’ Union.
• A condition of employment is that all staff are expected to assist in key events throughout the year e.g. Pathfinding, Summer Fayre and any other key event, including elections, if necessary. Staff are expected to portray a positive image, both internally and externally of the Students’ Union by displaying high standards of service, integrity, punctuality, politeness and professionalism.
• Where you are required to work with volunteers you must support and manage them appropriately in line with the Students’ Union volunteer policy
• Environmental consideration and environmental best practice is the responsibility of all Students’ Union staff.
